About a month ago, I came across Genealogy Trails.com and because this website wants to put as much of the original records online for "free" research for those of us who can't afford to buy subscriptions to places like Ancestry.com and others that I decided I would volunteer to help them. So I contacted Marla Zwakman and I have been transcribing records for them ever since. Some of the history is very interesting, some amusing stories are told, and a lot of facts are put down. Someone took time to record about their state, counties, and local areas with much detail in many of them. It is worthwhile to read these histories because they did relate names and sometimes biographies of the people of a town and even genealogies of some. If you remember Edson C Cole was divorced when the 1900 USFC Census was done and he was living at home. I didn't record what the date was but the same year in November on the 7th day he was married again, but first we will go to the first marriage. I did not find a divorce record as yet but will continue to look and if by chance I have it all wrong here I will update it when I find the truth for truth.

I haven't been on here for quite some time because I couldn't find it. Funny! Yes, but here I am now with some more info on the Austin Cole Family.
I still have not figured out who the parents are of Austin Palmer Cole and Clarence Melolle Cole but it may be Palmer Cole who married Sophia Austin or it could be Palmer and Sophia's son Jonathan Cole who is the father, and Austin Palmer and Clarence Melolle may be Ezra's great grandchildren or great-great grandchildren.

Here are some newspaper articles found about my grandmother and grandfather, who ran away together, 100 years ago. Schnectady Gazette, Wednesday Morning, January 8, 1913

GLOVERSVILLE - January 7, 1913 --- The police of this city and that of nearby cities are today engaged in looking for Ira Goodness and a sixteen year old girl, Laura LaFevre, both of this city, who eloped from the city on Sunday afternoon. The fact of their elopement was reported to the police late yesterday afternoon but did not become public until today when efforts to locate the runaways brought forth the fact. According to the girl's mother, Mrs. Rose LaFevre, of Jay Street, the girl and the man who is 27 years old, left this city Sunday afternoon on the 1 o'clock Fonda car and since that time she had heard nothing of them. Goodness has been in Gloversville several months. He was a fine appearing young man and was given a position as a waiter at the Eccentric Club, where he had worked and was found competent and likeable. He met the LaFevre girl some weeks ago and from the start manifested considerable interest in her. Several days ago, he talked of marriage to the girl and seemed to have considerable influence over her. On Sunday, Goodness informed the family of the girl that he was about to leave town. He said no more, but left the matter with the girl. At noon, she told her Mother that Goodness was to leave at 1 o'clock and she wished to go to the car along with another girl and young gentleman friend, and the Mother allowed her to go. After several hours waiting and she did not return, the Mother feared something was wrong and reported the matter to the police. It was learned that the couple had been seen in the electric waiting station and had boarded the car leaving for Fonda, at the hour named. The Mother, not hearing from the erring daughter, caused a warrant for the arrest of Goodness to be issued on the charge of abduction. Circular letters have been forwarded to the Police heads in this section of the state and it is hoped that some trace of the couple will be secured. Goodness being a waiter by profession will undoubtedly look for a position of that character.

Saturday, January 11, 1913 -- "Twas Good of Goodness"

The old time saw is brought to mind by the culmination of a romance in which Laura LeFevre of Gloversville and Ira Goodness of Cambridge, NY, figured in as principals.

A meeting between the two young folks - a brief courtship and elopement - a warrant sworn out by an anxious mother - an arrest - forgiveness - and for a denouement, a wedding. All transpired in the period of a few months. The ceremony took place Friday evening at the parochial residence of the Rev. Father Edward M. Brady, pastor of St. Mary's R.C. church in Gloversville. Rose LeFevre, the mother of the girl, and Police Captain Colson, acted as witnesses.

MOTHER TAKES CHILDREN: THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 9, 1920. Mrs. Charles Ayres of Glens Falls claimed her two children, Helen, four years old, and Howard, six years old, who were turned over to the Department of Charities when their father, Ira Goodness, a New York Cental freight conductor, was killed at Hudson recently. Mrs. Ayers and Goodness separated several months ago, it is said, and since the separation the former Mrs. Goodness remarried.

September 10, 1920 PREVENTS BIGAMY CHARGE

Albany Railroad Man's Wife Was Married to a Glens Falls Man Before Her First Spouse Was Killed - Two Dependent Children Bring to Light Unusual Case.

The killing of Ira Goodness of Albany, a New York Central freight conductor, a week ago last Sunday night at Newton Hook by a fast train, undoubtedly prevented a bigamy charge being pressed against his wife, who was at the time living at 78 West Street, Glens Falls, as the wife of Charles Ayres of whom she married while Goodness was yet alive and without the couple having been legaly married. Goodness had two children by his wife, whom he married when she was seventeen years of age.

The Goodness marriage did not move smoothly and Mrs. Goodness took the children with her and went to Glens Falls. There she married Ayres, who is said to have been divorced from a wife who is believed to be now living in Vermont. Goodness remained living at Albany and he secured the return of both of his children. Mrs. Margaret D'Auria was engaged to act as housekeeper for Goodness. Goodness's death caused Mrs. D'Auria to apply for alms for the Goodness children and this brought Mrs. Ayres to Albany with her husband and the couple agreed to take care of the youngsters so the children were turned over to them.

Mrs. Frank Church of Cambridge, a sister of Goodness, claimed the body in order to give it a decent burial. Mrs. Goodness-Ayres wanted to see to the interment and her new husband had agreed to bear the expense.

I Remember When

Mother's Day is past, and Father's Day is fast approaching. Both of my parents have passed away, but that doesn't mean I don't remember them and the good times we spent together as a family. In fact, I remember more now than I did when they were alive. I think of them more often now to. I wish I had been able to spend even more time with them after my marriage than I was able to. They did travel an awful lot from East Coast to West Coast, so that was kinda hard to do. They did live in my area for a while until Dad felt the wanderlust and they moved away again. Mom always called him a gypsy as he was always on the move. I think he just liked seeing the different places and visiting with all the relatives he could in the different areas of the United States that the family lived in. I had relatives in all the places I remember living as I grew up.

I spent a year or so in the state of Oregon while living at home with my parents. It was good. The weather was different then, cooler and cleaner, I remember. We lived close to the railroad tracks. I remember the house shuddering when the trains went by and they were loud. It was fun for a kid like me though. I also remember my brother's having fun playing gangster in some old cars that were around. They had the imagination and of course "back in the day" stories of the gangster's that were real wasn't that far in the past. Just bits and pieces of memory keep floating to the surface of my mind.

I remember going to school in Oregon. Our neighbors and friends of my parents, had a couple of sons in high school. I remember that one time one of the boys had to have a girls dress to wear for an initiation and they borrowed one of my dresses. He looked kinda silly since he was tall and skinny, but the dress fit him well enough, showing off his legs which he had to bare. He did wear jean shorts underneath the dress though for propriety's sake. I don't remember the outcome of his day at school, but I am sure it was hilarious and he was a good sport about all of it.

I have lived in Oregon, California, Arizona, Mississippi, New York, Indiana, and Kentucky. When living with my parents it was mostly New York, where both my parents and my siblings and myself were born, Arizona, California and the one year in Oregon. After I was married I lived in California, Arizona, Indiana and New York and a short stint in Mississippi. My parents lived in Indiana for a time also until they returned to New York or Arizona. Both my children were born in Arizona, but have never been in that state since they were less than 2 years old. They were in Califonia when ages 4 and 5, but mostly they were raised in Indiana. I got tired of moving back and forth. Had enough of that when living at home with my parents and grew up across the United States.

When I was young traveling was exciting, but when you make friends at school and then within the year move away for a year or two and move back you have to start all over again making new friends. It was hard for me to make friends in the first place so I didn't have very many, but when you have to move away during the school year and begin school in another state and try to make friends it was even harder for me. I never saw those friends again, I had made, after moving away and coming back. And starting school in the middle of the school year was even harder. I have report cards where I was in one school for two quarters in one state and for the same school year another report card where I was in another school for one quarter. Needless to say my grades suffered terribly. I liked learning, but it was hard getting used to the different teachers and the different teaching techniques they used. Arizona was so different from New York, the two states I went to school in. I never finished high school, but got married instead.

I did get my GED late in life and went on to get a degree in accounting and a certificate of completion in secretarial word processing from Indiana Vocational Technical College. I believe now I should have gone for a degree in computers or graphic design. I was learning graphic design on my own. They have websites where you can learn the basics of graphic design to build your own website and it is easier now. But I liked learning how to do the simple things that make a page look good, the html of graphics. I haven't done much of it since I was without the Internet for so long and I need to get back into it. I still get the information by email on how to do some of the things related to html. A friend of mine also taught me how to do some of the things for our websites we are on. Well, enough reminiscing for now. Did I spell that right?

My son Steve made a picnic table with our lumber for my son Mark. I am posting a picture of it here

. It is awesome. It is made with all treated lumber, not just the legs. It is put together with screws and not nails. It is braced so that it is not wobbly or weak in any way. It is heavy! Two men loaded it on the trailer, father and son; took 2 women and 2 men to unload it when we got it home. It was easier to load then unload. We wanted a large, good sturdy table for our summer cook-outs. This table has 8 foot long and 12 inch wide seats that also have an underlip; the table top is 10 foot long. It is doubly braced on the legs and has cross beams underneath because of the length of the table. The seats also were made so that they will not slump or warp over time.

Ancestors and The Living

This column is mostly for searching and finding our ancestors but sometimes it happens that someone close becomes a member of our past when not very much time has passed - in short, he or she becomes an ancestor to someone sooner than what we like.

It so happens that my children's father is about to join the ranks of those who have gone on ahead of the rest of us. He will join his brother and my brother, his parents and my parents and numerous other relations that have left us here to wait till it is our time to go. He will be missed and mourned by his children and by those who think of him as a father, though he did not father them. We will write in our books of the dead his name, his age, when he was born and when he passed away, and maybe whom he was married to and when.

The Lord above wrote his name in His book many years ago and like many before him I have always prayed that those names are not stricken out for some reason we may not know of. We will lay him to rest in a small country cemetery and many will come to say their goodbye's and to pay their respects to him and his family. Nieces and nephews and siblings plus those of the new family he married into will all be there. We will cry and talk about him to ease the pain. We will hug and hold on to each other in our sadness.

But if God is merciful and he was blessed, the passing person will be in a beautiful place with those he knew before they left us here. Maybe they will converse and talk about us here. Maybe they will hug and hold on to each other in gladness and joy of reunion. Maybe they will ask when will we join them and maybe they will get an answer and maybe not. Maybe they will look down upon us here and wish they could have said one last thing to make a difference in our lives, to change us in such a way that we would be waiting expectantly for that final day, to join them where they are. Maybe they wish they could tell us what it is like there. Maybe we wish we really knew or could know.

Bless us all, we can know, by what the Bible, God's Holy Word, does tell us what it is like there. We just have to believe the Word. I believe the Word. I believe all those who have left me behind here on this earth, are waiting patiently for all the rest of us. They know we have go through many things before we can come to that realization that if only we believe it is that way, then it will be that way. Who wants to believe any other way? Who wants to believe the Devil and all his lies? Who wants to live in fear all their days - do you? You will if you believe the Devil, but if you believe the Word and in Jesus and His Father, then there will never be any fear of what is here on this earth or what lies ahead after we leave this mortal temporary body made of flesh.

Goodbye John! Say hello to my parents and your parents for me. Run to them, let go of this world and leave it for the better one, the one without pain and trouble. We will miss you but always know we will join you someday to. God speed, darling.

I added my mom and dad to "find-a-grave" website along with a picture of them, and a short bio of each of them. I am still working on the memorial for them and will be adding more as time goes on.

Well, I deleted my family tree I had started and began all over again. I have about 4 other family trees that when I get them incorporated into the newest one, I will delete them to so there won't be any more confusion. All the family trees I had on there relate to me so I started with myself and will connect every one to me through other people. I also found I had another account where I had started a second tree on one of the surnames, so I logged in and deleted that family tree to. There were just too many of my own plus all the other's that have some connection to mine showing up in those little green leaves. I look at most of them but I don't accept them unless they have some information I don't have that I know would be correct and can double check easily. As soon as I finish with one Surname tree I will go in and delete it so that it doesn't keep coming up. I won't continue them either so there is no reason to keep them on there. I was going to put all my family on FTM and then upload it to Ancestry but I didn't and doubt if I will now. I may later download all the information I have on Ancestry to my FTM and see if that works. When it is sync'd, I can work in one and automatically update the other one instead of keyboarding it all in again on the other one. Well, I really wish I had done that before getting it so large, but it's not to late so I may try that about 2 in the morning when it's free to upload and download and doesn't use up my allotted megabytes for the day. That really sucks if you know what I mean. I have trouble with the slowness of this Internet connection anyway. It just dies all of a sudden and the screens' are stuck and nothing moves, back or forward or anywhere. So it may be doing something in the background either on the Internet or on my computer but it sure stops me working when it happens. I miss the problem and trouble free days - Oh, I've never had any! Wishing and hoping and thinking and wishing and hoping and thinking. I'm outa here. Got work to do.

Technology

Sometimes I wonder about all this technology and people like me who are not technological to a great degree, and not completely ignorant of how it works either.

I put my family on Family Tree software which is an Ancestry.com product and I uploaded one branch of my family, but then Ancestry has all these hints/leaves that they want me to look at and when I do I find so many mistakes in theirs that I don't want to use the information in my tree. I don't want to corrupt my tree and/or not be able to fix it. Okay,

I know we don't have to accept anything we don't want to put in there and I mostly ignore the hints/leaves after checking them out. I want to put my own information that I find on my own or with a little help from Ancestry when I want to. I didn't want to put all these side lines on this branch of the tree but it keeps bugging me to do so and I end up putting in the information because I read these other hints that have the information all wrong and I can't stand by and let it become an accepted misconception on all the other family tree's out there.

Too many people are blandly accepting all they read as true instead of getting at the truth and it is spreading like wildfire does. It is too easy to just accept the work of someone else and it is time consuming and (in my opinion a whole lot more fun) to search out the true records and get the correct information.

I have made a lot of mistakes in my own research because I accepted my mother's work on her line. I actually need to apologize to Mr Adam Mark Fonda because he may (still not sure, doing more research) have been correct in the use of the name Peter for the middle name of my ancestor, even though he told me he did it on his own and not that he found it actually written that way, but because most family's named the son after the father in some way, by using father's given name as the son's middle name, which I find is true in many cases but not all. But I don't intend to use that in my own family tree unless I see in records that it is actually the whole real name of the person.

As I said I put one branch of my grandmother's line on Ancestry and now I have to update it on a weekly or sometimes daily basis as I didn't put in all the children's information or the spouses of the children etc and I don't have all the dates as I should have. I have other tree's started that relate to that tree on Ancestry and I can take that information and transfer it over. I also have my family and my inlaw's family on Tribal Pages which takes up time to update all the time to. So much to do and not enough hours in a day to do it all. Hopefully I will accomplish much on this day if I don't get sleepy, as it is warm and rainy out doors. Have to make some cards today too for some people who are special. Off to the boards.

Mistakes Can Happen

In doing research I have come across some impossibilities that keep on getting passed down, mainly because people don't look closely at what they find and copy the information without really checking everything out about it. Take the record of Isaac Cole. Isaac was born in Rockland Co., NY and christened on 3 Nov 1779 in Tappan, Rockland, NY. It also states that he died 16 Jul 1855. He was the son of Isaac Abrahan Cole/Kool and Catherine Severns according to this record I found. Under marriages it says his spouse was Anna Vickey and they were married Nov 20, 1860. Now some people are going to take this record and copy it verbatim without looking at the information and seeing the fault with it. If he died in 1855, they couldn't be married in 1860 unless you are writing a sci-fi novel or making a movie where the corpse is kept around so someone could inherit or something. Yuk! Now if the mistake was just in a misprint of the date, say the marriage date should be 1760 instead, it still seems like it would be wrong since Isaac wasn't christened until 1779. The problem here is that there is no birth date listed. Most family's had their children christened shortly after birth so they take the christening date to represent the birth date of the child when a birth date can't be found. But, what if, for some reason Isaac didn't get christened shortly after birth and was christened years later. Here's where more research is demanded. You would have to find the parents, and siblings to see if that would be plausible according to the dates of birth or christenings of each of them. I have a whole family listing the births/christenings and death dates of each of Isaac's siblings and they all died in the 1800's, including Isaac, and his sister Sarah was the last to die in 1863. Some have birthdates and some have christening dates and some have both, so it seems likely that the marriage between Isaac and Anna Vickey never happened, at least not on that date of 20 Nov 1860. Read carefully every piece of information you find before incorporating it into your own tree, because a mistake like this could cause numerous problems for you later on. Now then, here is a plausible explanation, but may not be true either. Isaac Cole/Kool may not be the right one. There could be another Isaac Cole/Kool out there who did marry Anna Vickey on 20 Nov 1860, just not this Isaac Cole/Kool, son of Isaac Abraham and Catherine Severns Cole/Kool. Have fun researching.

Update to this story: There is another record submitted that has Isaac Cole and Anna Vickery married on 20 November in 'wait for it', 1800. Aha, someone mis-wrote the year, probably because older records are sometimes very hard to read or faded out or just illegible to our eyes. Make sure your dates always make sense. Another mistake was the spouse's surname spelling. In one record it was Vickey and in the other, the correct dated one, it was Vickery. I have come across records where a given name for a child changed every ten years during the census taking. Because some parents gave 3 or 4 names for a given name of a child like this one - Sophia Margareta Anna. This woman every ten years was listed by something different but her date of birth/age always matched so I knew it was the same person in the same family. At the later census' she was called Anna because she named her girl child Sophia Margaret. Happy hunting.

Broadalbin: – Mrs. Alice E. Fonda, 82, RD 1, Broadalbin, died yesterday at her home after suffering an attack.

Born in Broadalbin, she had lived in Gloversville for many years, returning to Broadalbin in 1960. She was a graduate of Gloversville High School and attended Potsdam College.
For several years , she taught school in the rural Broadalbin area and then was employed as secretary-treasurer of the former Domestic Glove Co. in Gloversville for 30 years. She retired in 1961. She was a member of Bleeker Street Church of Christ.
Survivors are her husband, Nelson Fonda; two cousins and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. tomorrow at Jefford's Chapel by the Rev. Lester Snell, retired pastor of Bleeker Street Church of Christ. Burial will be in Union Mills Cemetery. Friends may call from 7 to 9 tonight.
Contributions may be made to Bleeker Street Church of Christ.
